Just finishing up this great figure from Dark Sword Miniatures, Male warrior with axe #7427 sculpted by Jeff Grace. Superbly sculpted and cast with little clean up. I first discovered the Dark Sword line at Reapercon this year and got 13 of them!! Really well done figures and it was a lot of fun to paint. I tired NMM (non metallic metal) for the armor using the new Scale 75 NMM steel set which I picked up from
www.lastcavalry.com a few weeks ago. BTW, give lastcavalry a try! Super fast delivery and Dave, the owner is a ton of help and always available for my phone calls with dire painting questions! I just need to get him to carry the Dark Sword line now!
I love Scale 75 figures and wanted to give their paints a try but they took some getting used to. They dry a lot slower then normal acrylics but the colors are really bright and they dry super dead flat. The usage instructions are not really useful and you need to do a lot of experimentation to find the correct tones you want but I didn't have to add any other colors outside the paint set to get the color I wanted.
Zach Lanier and Jessica Rich did two variations for the box art so I used them as a guide for my paintwork. If you get a chance, check out their versions on the Dark Sword site. Really outstanding work by both of them!
The kit comes in two pieces, the left arm holding the battle axe and then the body. I cleaned up the figure and then primed in black and onto the painting! I started with the cape first using Reaper midnight blue as the base. I love the Reaper midnight blue! A rich color and as usual, great paint from Reaper!
I started the NMM on the arm to see if I could pull it off. Once I saw that I didn't totally screw it up and went on to the chest plate.
I then moved on to finishing up the armor with lots of glazes.
Then on to the base which is my least favorite part of a figure in my opinion but its something I am working on. The NMM was a challenge enough!!
