Tulsa 2013

Another year and another Tulsa show! I must say I was quite impressed with the quality again this year. This was my fifth Tulsa show and the talent gets better and better each year. Sadly, attendance was a bit down this year which seems to be a trend lately with our sour economy. All in all it was a good show but the lighting in the venue was terrible. As usual, there were grumblings about judging, mainly in the fantasy category. Don't get me wrong, I love the Tulsa show and they are a great group of guys but in my humble opinion they need actual fantasy judges. In my short time in the hobby I have seen quite a shift towards fantasy figures. There were several fantasy entries that were just plain overlooked. I am not talking about my work. But there were just some outstanding fantasy pieces that got no recognition. Granted, its a historical centered show but if you have a fantasy category you should have judges that are primarily fantasy painters. I am not looking to offend anyone, just my opinion though I heard several other people express the same sentiment. I'll get off my soapbox now so here are a few highlights of some outstanding figures from this years show.
Rusty Nails usual horror figures!

Scott Primeau painted this fantastic 200mm SS soldier and it took gold.

Two more of Scott Primeau's work. "Honey Bee" and a WWII Marine

Two works from Tulsa Grandmaster Jason Green who showed his usual subtle yet mindblowing talent!

Another two of Jason Green's figures. The indian bust was probably my favorite historical piece at the show.

Anders Heintz' Landsknecht and scratchbuilt Ork which took Best of Show. My picture does it no justice!

From Mike Meehan is a slight conversion from Scale75. By far the best fantasy figure at the show in my opinion and the freehand work was stunning. The saddest part was it wasn't even judged! Criminal!!!!

Also Mike Meehan's Landsknecht and a piece called "Pondering Genesis." My god I thought this piece was so well done but most people didn't "get it." Mike had shared the wip pics with me a few weeks before and I fell in love with it. Other than his "Kitty" piece this would tie for tops in my book.

Another of Mike Meehans figures. The freehand was completely sick!!! I hate him!!!

These 3 kits are from a young painter, Ross Singletary. Watch out for this young guy! Give him a few years and this guy will be one of the top painters in the country. I was lucky enough to trade figures with this guy so I can say I have one of his!
