Non Metallic Gold

This short tutorial is my very juvenile attempt at NMM gold. I am by no means an expert and still have so much to learn about NMM in any shape or form. I have studied several NMM tutorials I have come across as of late and many have very different ways to achieve their results along with hundred's of different combinations of paints used. As most of us in this hobby, we all hope to find the next product or paint that will, overnight help us master a technique we have always wanted to master. There are a few companies that sell multi bottle paint sets for NMM such as Andrea and Scale 75. I purchased both the NMM gold and silver paint sets from Scale 75 and tried them both and was not satisfied with the results from either set. But I don't settle on one set color combination for NMM for all types of armor or item I am trying to paint in that style but I have found the basic combination that works best for me of course with a few tweaks here and there are demonstrated below. I'll have to credit Marike Reimer for the color mix and also the "blueprint" for my tutorial. I got her mutli dvd set, "Masterworks Miniature Painting with Marike Reimer" from Darksword Miniatures. A nicely done dvd tutorial and well worth the purchase price though a bit like watching stereo instructions. The figure is Darksword Miniatures "Theif of Hearts #5, DSM7517.

PAINTS:
Vallejo Mahogany
Vallejo Ochre Brown
Vallejo Yellow Ochre
Vallejo Pale Sand
Andrea Prussian Blue
Andrea Golden Yellow Ink
I got all these paints from Dave at www.lastcavalry.com. Great place to get your hobby supplies and a great guy to deal with!

My first step is a basecoat of Ochre Brown. Marike does a darker basecoat but I prefer the Ochre Brown as a good starting point for me.
First shadow is the basecoat plus Mahogany 50/50

Second shadow is straight Mahogany
Third shadow is Mahogany brown with a touch of Andrea Prussian blue. This is a mix you need to play with. I literally did half a brush full of Prussian blue. You don't need to add much blue because it will really darken your mix to fast!
Final shadow is just a touch more of Prussian blue added to the previous shadow mix. Again, you need to play with this mix. Just to your personal taste.
Here you can see my color mixes for the shadow colors.
Now on to the highlights. My first highlight is the base color of Ochre Brown with Yellow Ochre 50/50.
Next highlight is more Yellow Ochre added to the previous mix.
Third highlight is straight Yellow Ochre.
Final highlight is Pale sand added to the Yellow Ochre. I added about 30% Pale Sand.
The next blend is Ochre Brown glazed over the entire area.

Now I go in with Andrea Yellow ink diluted 50/50 and glaze over the entire area and straight Pale Sand for extreme highlights.
Now you go back and line the different areas with the Prussian blue or Black if you choose. I used Reaper "Blue Liner" for lining and then retouch any areas with Pale Sand for the extreme Highlights.

Hopefully this will help someone because it was a good learning experience for me to do. My method and outcome are far from stunning and there are much better examples all over the net. This is just what seems to work for me but I will come back and update this tutorial as I develop this technique further. Questions or comments are always welcome and thanks for looking!!
